Kiera Newsome was convicted of murder even though she was in her high school class 13 miles away from the crime scene at the time of the killing (as witnessed by her teacher and schoolwork) and she did not match the witness descriptions.  The California Innocence Project investigated Kiera’s case and found several witnesses who confirmed that Kiera was not the shooter and that she was set up by a gang member.  On Christmas Eve 2018, Governor Jerry Brown commuted Kiera’s sentence, making her eligible for parole in 2020. On April 7, 2020, Kiera walked out of prison a free woman after serving nearly 19 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. For more information about Kiera’s case go to:
